Maximum useful for siege is 13 units (39k men). Typically you will never have enough so you will always still want guards and cannons. Late late in the game you will start getting tanks/planes. And of course you should probably get rid of your infantry when you get guards. Just don't neglect mixing in some cav and filling out the back row of any army mid game on with cannons. Ideal armies are not that important in this game, really. You may hook these around the enemy and split them up as he shatters to rout his whole army. It may make sense to make some designated cavalry units that can move faster also, which you do not commit to the main battles. I typically leave these split into 2-3 unit stacks. Engineers come in from behind to assist with seines or as defensive artillery if you are attacked. You want to get the recon bonus, so always a few hussars/dragoons. Battles are less wide with forests/mountains/hills. You need to fill in your front row before you worry too much about your back row.
